Chromium Picolinate 200mcg

Chromium, in its trivalent form, is an essential trace element that is needed to form an organic complex known as Glucose Tolerance Factor (GTF). GTF interacts with insulin to regulate the uptake of glucose by the cells. Chromium encourages the production of energy from glucose, especially in muscles; it increases protein synthesis and lowers blood fat levels, including harmful LDL-cholesterol. Chromium may also suppress hunger pangs through a direct effect on the satiety centre in the brain.

Chromium deficiency is thought to be common. One estimate suggested that 90% of adults are deficient as most people get less than 50 mcg from their diet; only about 2% of this is absorbable.

Chromium deficiency has been linked to poor glucose tolerance and diabetes; it is now widely believed that a lack of Chromium is a risk factor of maturity-onset diabetes as well as cardiovascular disease. Other symptoms that may be due to chromium deficiency include poor tolerance of alcohol, abnormal blood fat levels, hunger pangs and weight gain, a decreased sperm count and impaired fertility.

There is currently no EC RDA set for Chromium, intakes of between 50-200 mcg per day are considered safe and adequate. Chromium supplements are best absorbed when taken with vitamin C.
